EASTER ON THE FARM

Y01A8965
on saturday we all gathered on the grounds behind mom and dad’s for a day full of easter fun!  my grandmama brought lots of easter ham, freshly-baked bread, tomatoes, pickles, and all the other fixins you could imagine and we enjoyed a tasty picnic under the pecan trees. the children played their little hearts out and everyone had a great time.  i’m sure that i am breaking all kinds of blog rules by posting way too many photos, but it was so hard to just pick a few. it was a BIG day with lots of people and lots of FUN!

SO! here are lots and lots of photos of our easter festivities on the farm!

HELLO SPRING!

snake2
well folks, spring has definitely sprung around here.  the pollen is out, and it’s out in full force.  my allergies are suffering from all of this pollen for sure, and just this morning i saw big puffs of pollen falling from the trees, like clouds of yellow dust.

oh, south alabama!

i’m sure pollen isn’t the only thing out around here.  you see those snakes?  yeah, i’m sure they’re beginning to crawl.  and we have to be on. the. watch. for them!  now don’t you worry, that snake that dad and joe are holding was one that they killed last year.  i guess they were so proud of themselves for killing that snake, that they had to have a picture with their prize?!  and you see how they are trying not to get too close to that slithery thing, though, don’t you!  if you live in the south, and you take a picture of yourself holding a snake that you killed, you might be one of us.  ha!  but, seriously, at least they killed it.  the problem, though, is that there are more where that one came from.  i! hate! snakes!

but you know, they are too funny holding that snake, though!

happy first day of spring, y’all!

Hahhahaha!!!! For a moment, I thought that it might have been another one! Yeah, if you take a picture holding your prize snake, you might be one of us! ;-)

WHERE THE DEER AND THE ANTELOPE PLAY.

as i was standing in the kitchen stirring grayson’s oatmeal early yesterday morning, i glanced up and saw a sweet little deer in our backyard.  since we have been living on the hill, this was the first time i have seen a deer out here.  i grew up on this land, but that was before all the pines.  so now that the land is turning into a forest, it looks like bambi and friends are moving into the pines with us.  i sent these photos in a text to mom and dad, so that they could see that we had a new neighbor up here on the hill.  mom replied, look kids a deer.  ha!  how fitting. ’tis the season for clark and a christmas vacation.  i think joe is going to put a little salt block or a cracked corn feeding station out there so that hopefully more deer move into the pines with us and we can watch them.  hope you all are having a lovely weekend my dears!

PRETTY LIPSTICK GROWING ON A VINE.

wild vines in the field

we have some paths and trails through the field that make for some good walking.. which we do a lot around here!  the little ones love it and there’s all kinds of different things to look at and learn about.  just like these lipstick vines.  aren’t they pretty!  they are called lipstick vines because the new tiny buds look like a tube of lipstick.  how fitting!  the deep reddish-orange color looks like a pretty shade of lipstick too.  there’s a nice patch of these lipstick vines clumped together on the fence line on one of our paths.  i thought i’d do a little research and see what i could find out about these pretty little wild flowering vines.  i learned that they require bright sunlight and semi-moist, well-drained soil conditions to grow. but, as with any plant, some of them require moister soil than others.  they bloom most of the time in mid-summer and thrive in tropical climates.. they prefer warm and humid conditions.  no wonder they like it here..  it’s been very warm (more like HOT!) and very humid here lately.

here’s a neat little tidbit… you can take cuttings of lipstick vines, replant them, and they will be rooted in about three weeks.  they just need a lot of light and some daily misting to satisfy their hunger for humidity.  sounds like a nice, low maintenance houseplant to me, and how pretty it would be in a hanging basket!  i don’t know how much of a green thumb i have, but one day when time allows for it i may try to plant my own lipstick plant.
do you get into re-rooting plants? what’s your favorite houseplant?

roe - July 27, 2012 - 3:14 pm

I never had a green thumb so last year I tried planting a TON of plants and flowers around our deck and in a large retaining wall in front of the house. They look(ED) so awesome…then…our precious little Harlee (black lab) decided that the planter would make a fantastic bed/play area. All of the potted plants on my deck have become snacks for her. My favorites were my Hibiscus plants though. Those were sooo pretty.
